Men Tie for First, Women Second at UB Invite

The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams concluded their regular seasons Saturday afternoon at the UB Invitational. The Bulls' men's squad tied for top honors with Cornell at 35 points apiece while UB's women scored 46 points, finishing second behind Cornell's 35 points.

Waterloo's men placed third with 62 while Hilbert was fourth among the four scoring teams with 120. Waterloo also finished third in the women's race with 64 while Brock was fourth with 101. Medaille's women and Brock's men did not field enough runners to place in the team scoring. The meet was run in sustained winds of 20 miles per hour with gusts of up to 30 mph.

Unattached runner Jerimie Slick won the men's 8 kilometer race in a time of 25:55.7. He was followed by three UB runners Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) who each were timed at 26:10.7.

Also scoring for the Bulls' men were Tom Stuart (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) who was 14th in 27:15.5 and Jeff Czyz (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) in 19th at 27:43.1. Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) placed out of the scoring. Commisso was 20th in 27:47.6 while Beatty was 21st in 27:48.7.

Waterloo's Debbie Buhlers blitzed the field to take the women's 5 kilometer race in 18:13.5, over a full minute ahead of the second place runner, teammate Kristie Henry. UB's Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) placed third and fourth respectively in 19:30.5 and 19:39.8. Cornell runners then took the next seven spots ensuring the lowest score to win the team title.

UB's women also got scoring performances from Danielle Morell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley), Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell). Morrell was 12th in 19:58.7, Rhodes finished 15th in 20:08.0 and Keck placed 18th in 20:15.1. Udo Okeke (Seattle, WA/Lagos) in 21st at 20:21.7 and Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica) in 22nd 20:31.9 rounded out the Bulls' performances.

MAC Championships Await Bulls

Both Bulls' squads are off next week. The teams are next in action at the Mid-American Conference championships in Kalamazoo, MI, on October 28.

UB looks to improve on last season's showings at Kent State where the men finished 9th of 12 and the women placed 11th of 13.
