Bulls Cruise To Easy Wins At UB Open

Slick, Keck win individual cross country races for Bulls

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams cruised to easy victories Saturday afternoon at the UB Open. Both squads scored a perfect 15 points each to take team honors. Daemen College finished second in the men's meet with 59 points followed by Erie Community College (76) and Pittsburgh-Bradford (94). In the women's meet, Pittsburgh-Bradford finished second to the Bulls with 50 points. Women's teams from Daemen, Erie Community College and Medaille also were in the field but did not race enough runners to score.

In the men's race, the Bulls posted the the top 12 finishes overall and 14 of the top 15. Senior Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) was the first to cross the finish line, completing the 8K course around UB's Lake LaSalle in 25:50. Slick was followed immediately by Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 25:51 and 25:52, respectively. Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) raced to fourth in 26:15 and Onile White (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) rounded out the Bulls' point-scorers with his fifth-place finish in 26:53.

The women's race turned into a cakewalk as well with UB runners taking the first 12 spots across the finish line. Senior Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) took the individual title in 18:49 for the 5K distance. Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) finished second in 18:50 and Jessica Moldovan (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was third in 18:51. Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rounded out UB's scorers in 18:57 and 18:58, respectively.

UB's top runners head to the Pre-NCAA meet in Terre Haute, IN for next Saturday's race that will feature some of the top teams from around the country. The remainder of the Bulls will travel to Rochester to race in the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational. Both events begin at 11:00 am.
