Squads Turn In Strong Races At Paul Short

Both the men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 27th annual Lehigh University Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. The Bulls' men's team placed 14th among 36 scoring teams with 436 points while the women were 11th in a field of 34 scoring 331 points. Michigan State won the overall men's title with 65 points while Villanova took the women's crown with 58 points.

In the men's race, Senior Tony David (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was UB's top placer crossing the finish line in 25:17.37 for 25th place among over 250 runners in the eight kilometer race. Sophomore Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) placed 49th in 25:40.25 while sophomore Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was 57th in 25:51.19. Freshman Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) placed 146th in 26:58.06. Villanova's Adrian Blincoe won the individual title with his 24:08.83 clocking.

The UB women were led by Sophomore Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) who was 44th in 22:22.95 in the six kilometer race. Sophomore Danielle Morrell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley) was 47th in 22:26.18 and senior Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) was 58th in 22:32.74 out of 231 runners. Toledo's Tuula Laitinen turned in a 20:26.20 showing to win the women's race.

Other UB women's runners to place for the squad included junior Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica) in 80th at 22:58.86 and freshman Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) in 102nd with a 23:18.72 showing.

Two other UB athletes participated in the open race. Senior Udo Okeke (Seattle, WA/Lagos) placed 41st in 24:39.16 while freshman Paige Patterson (Newfane, NY/Newfane) was 78th in 27:27.25 in a field of 89.

Bulls Best Toledo at Paul Short

Among the women's squads entered in the Paul Short Invitational was Mid-American Conference foe Toledo. Both the Bulls and Rockets ended up with identical 331 point scores but UB earned 11th place while Toledo was 12th based upon scoring runners placements. UB's fifth scoring runner, Hollie Rhodes, placed 102nd while Toledo's fifth runner, Tiffany Brown, placed 188th. The Rockets however earned top individual honors as Tuula Laitinen won the race in 20:26.20.

UB Invitational Next Up

The Bulls' men's and women's squads return home this Saturday to race on their home course. The squads host the UB Invitational with the women's race starting at 12:00 pm with the men's race to follow at 12:45 pm. Teams expected to compete include local squads Hilbert and Medaille, Canadian institutions Waterloo and Brock, as well as Ivy League power Cornell. Cornell's women's team finished second to Villanova at last Saturday's Paul Short Meet.

  • Men placed 4th of 10 teams, 134 points
  • Women placed 5th of 12 teams, 126 points

    Sept. 23 at St. John Fisher Invitational

  • Men placed fifth of 11 teams, 117 points

    Sept. 30 at Lakefront Invitational

  • Men placed 14th of 42 teams, 392 points
  • Women placed 10th of 46 teams, 331 points

    Oct. 7 at Paul Short Invitational

  • Men placed 14th of 36 teams, 436 points
  • Women placed 11th of 34 teams, 331 points
