Bulls Post Top Times at Paul Short Invite

Andy Wigton and Jenny Koeppel pace squads with season-best performances

BETHLEHEM, PA – The University at Buffalo’s men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the 30th Annual Paul Short Invitational Run on Saturday at Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus. The UB men placed 18th among 33 squads with 506 points while the women took 19th in a field of 32 with 494 points. Georgetown swept the men’s and women’s team titles with 31 and 28 points, respectively.

The Bulls picked up season-best times from their runners on Saturday. Andy Wigton (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) paced the men with a 25:01.28 clocking for the 8K distance to finish 20th in a field of 233 runners. The time shaved 35 seconds off his previous season-best (26:25.2) set at last weekend’s Iona Meet of Champions.

Joining Wigton with top finishes for the Bulls in the race were Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) and Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Beatty placed 87th in the large field with a season-best 25:57.06, bettering his mark 26:48.42 set at the Miami Fall Classic on September 13. McKenna, meanwhile, cut 16 seconds off his best mark, also set at the Miami meet, with a 26:09.31 showing to place 105th overall. Columbia’s Steve Sundell won the individual title in 24:08.44.

In the women’s race, junior Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) continued her string of top finishes for the Bulls. Koeppel, for the fourth straight meet this season, was the Bulls’ top woman with her 18th place finish in 21:38.52 in the 6K race that included 224 runners. Koeppel cut nearly a full minute off her time from last week’s Iona Meet of Champions (22:31.1), the only other race that UB’s women have contested at 6K.

Jennifer Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) sliced more than two minutes off last week’s performance with her 22:31.94 showing to take 66th place. Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) also cut down her season-best time by more than a minute with a 23:17.26 performance to finish 115th.

Both squads host the UB Open next Saturday (October 11). For the first time in several years, the races will be held off-campus with Grand Island’s Beaver Island State Park serving as the host course. The women’s race is scheduled for 11:00 am with the men’s race to follow at 11:45 am.
