Squads See Strongest Competition of Season at Paul Short Invitational

UB’s cross country teams raced against their strongest competitions at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Friday afternoon. The UB women scored a team total of 487 points to place 18th in a field of 35 schools from throughout the Northeast. The UB men finished with 710 points for a 26th-place showing in the 42-team field. Princeton held off Wisconsin by one point, 61-62, to take the women's title. Big East members Villanova (103) and Pittsburgh (166) topped the men’s standings.

In the women's 6K race, the first time the UB women competed at the distance, the Bulls’ top finisher was sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore). Veith finished 14th overall in a field of 237 racers in a clocking of 21:14. It was the third consecutive weekend that Veith was UB’s top women’s finisher. Junior Aleksandra Bykowsa (Poznan, Poland/Third High School of Poznan) was UB’s next finisher in 22:14 to place 58th while senior Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) rounded out the Bulls’ top three finishers with a time of 22:36 for 81st place. Villanova junior Frances Koons won the women’s individual title in 20:16.

The men competed at 8K with senior Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) claiming 48th place in 25:14 as UB’s top finisher. The time was his fastsest of the season, bettering his 25:55 time two weeks ago when he won at the Toledo Invitational. Junior Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished 145th in 26:14 while senior David Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) was right behind in 26:15 for 148th place. The times were season bests for the duo, cutting nearly 30 seconds off their previous top marks from Toledo. A total of 278 men comprised the field with Villanova senior Robert Curtis winning the race in 23:53, just one second ahead of Norfolk State junior David Kemboi.

Open Divisions Also Feature UB Runners

UB runners also competed in the open section with sophomore Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) finishing 37th in 26:06 for 8K as UB's top male finisher and senior Jennie Donofrio (Penfield, NY/Penfield) taking 183rd place in 24:42 in the women's 6K race. Over 400 runners competed in both the men's and women's open races.
