Squads Face Stiff Competition at Lakefront

The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams faced some stiff competition at last weekend's Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola University in Chicago.

The Bulls' women's squad placed 10th of the 46 entered teams with 331 points while the men's team was 14th in a 42-team field with 392 points. The University of Missouri swept both the men's and women's competitions. UB's women were seventh of 14 Division I teams entered while the men were also seventh of the 11 Division I entries.

Leading the pack for UB's women was senior Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) who completed the six kilometer course in 22:44 to place 29th among 496 runners. Missouri's Anna Marie Brooks ran away from the field to take invidual honors, clocking in at 21:11.

Two other UB women Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) and Danielle Morrell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley),were 61st and 72nd respectively with times of 23:25 and 23:34.

Completing the UB scoring were Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside), Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica) and Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell). Rhodes was 85th in 23:49 while Rhodes placed 102nd in 24:03 and Keck completed the course in 24:09 for 108th place.

For the men, Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) again led the way finishing the eight kilometer race in 27th place in 26:00. Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was the second Bull across the finish line in placing 50th in 26:28 while Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was 64th in 26:41. Unattached runner Trent Briney won the race in 24:40.

Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) finished 139th in 27:25 while Tom Stuart (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) was 170th in 27:42 to round out the men's scoring.

Bulls See MAC Foes at Lakefront

The Mid-American Conference was represented by several squads at the Lakefront Invitational over the weekend giving the Bulls their first look at league competition.

In the men's field, besides UB's 14th place showing, Ball State took fifth place with 204 points while Marshall finished behind the Bulls in 19th position with 487 points.

Meanwhile in the women's race, Western Michigan placed fourth with 195 points ahead of the Bulls' tenth place showing. UB did finish ahead of Northern Illinois and Marshall who were 21st and 24th respectively.

Paul Short Invitational Next Up

The Bulls will race in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in Lehigh University's Paul Short Invitational this coming weekend. An annual event for the squads, the Paul Short meet, like last weekend's Lakefront Invitational, will feature better than 30 men's and women's teams from the East and Southeast.

  • Men placed fifth of 11 teams, 117 points

  • Men placed 14th of 42 teams, 392 points
  • Women placed 10th of 46 teams, 331 points
