BETHLEHEM, PA - The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams faced some of the nation's top programs on Saturday at Lehigh University's 32nd Annual Paul Short Invitational. The UB women finished 20th in a field of 47 schools while the men placed 23rd against a field of 44 entries.

Top programs from all three NCAA divisions competed. Columbia, ranked 20th in the nation, won the women's title with 121 points while Georgetown, ranked 12th in the country, captured its third consecutive men's crown scoring 123 points. The Bulls scored 592 points in the women's race and 620 in the men's race.

UB's men got a strong race from junior Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). McKenna finished 17th in a field of 299 men with a time of 24:24 for the 8K distance. The clocking, which put McKenna under a 5:00 pace, was a career-best, cutting 42 seconds off his previous best, set at the Central Collegiate Meet two weeks ago.

The next two placers for the Bulls were senior Andy Leonard (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) in 25:05 to place 78th and sophomore Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) in 25:46 to finish 155th. St. Francis (PA) senior Ryan Sheehan won the men's individual title in 23:53.

Freshman Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was the next UB finisher in 22:05.5 to claim 81st place and sophomore Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) rounded out UB's top three racers with a finish of 22:32.6 to take 128th place. All three times by the Bulls bettered last week's 6K showings at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational by 30-60 seconds.

Georgetown sophomore Elizabeth Maloy won the women's race in 20:28.0.

UB's cross country squads host the UB Open next Saturday. The meet, held at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, will feature a women's 5K race starting at 11:00 am followed by a men's 8K race at 11:45 am.
