Koeppel Named MAC's Top Runner for Third Straight Week
BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo women's cross country athlete Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Women's Runner of the Week for the third consecutive time this season. The award was announced this morning by the league office in Cleveland. Koeppel has won the award three of the four weeks that the MAC has been naming its top runners. Koeppel, a senior, earned this week's award after a seventh-place finish in a very competitive field of 175 runners at last Saturday's Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA. In the 6K race, she turned in a time of 20:59.05, bettering her personal best on the course by nearly 40 seconds. The Bulls finished sixth overall among 26 Division I teams. The five teams that the Bulls finished behind at the meet (Tennessee, Villanova, Columbia, William & Mary and Georgetown) are all currently ranked in the latest FinishLynx Women's Top 30 Cross Country poll. With their finish against such top national competition, the Bulls also earned two votes in the poll, the first time that the program has been honored. In her three races this season, Koeppel has won twice and placed seventh in a much-larger and experienced field at this past Saturday's meet. Her 17:49 time in the 5K race at the Central Collegiate Invitational meet on September 18 is the second-fastest in the MAC this season, just one second behind Ball State's Jill Scully, who clocked a 17:48 the night before at the Indiana Intercollegiates. "It's a great tribute to her consistency to be honored three times this season," said head coach Vicki Mitchell. The Bulls travel to Philadelphia for this Saturday's LaSalle Invitational. Racing is slated to
begin at 3:00 pm. |
