Cross Country Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Men Win UB Stampede Invite, Women Take Fourth The University at Buffalo men’s cross country team pulled out a stunning two-point victory over Cornell on Saturday to take the team title at the UB Stampede Invitational at Beaver Island State Park. The Bulls (28 points) placed the first three runners across the finish line ahead of the Big Red (30 points) to provide the margin of victory. Ten men's squads comprised the field.
In the women's race, UB placed fourth with 89 points in the 11-team field. Cornell took first place with 20 points. A light drizzle during the women's race followed by clearing skies for the men's race created a wet, spongy surface on the grass course. McKenna Wins Individual Title UB senior Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) took the top spot in the men's 8K race. McKenna finished in 27:04.90. It was the second consecutive week that a UB men’s runner has won the individual title. A pair of UB runners finished immediately behind McKenna. Senior Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili), who won last week’s Toledo Invitational, finished in 27:10.00 for second place and junior Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was third in 27:14.20 to hold off Cornell's top runner, Peter Loy, who finished fourth in 27:15.80. Other UB men's runners to score points included Chuck Laderer (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) in ninth place in 27:42.60 and Dave Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) in 13th place in 27:45.40. Veith Leads Women’s Finishers UB sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was the highest finisher for the Bulls, taking third place in 18:28.30. Cornell runners took four of the top five spots in the women's 5K race to open the meet.
A Sneak Peak at the MACs This season’s UB home meet served as a precursor to this season’s Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be hosted by the Bulls at the same Beaver Island course on October 28. UB’s men’s and women’s teams and the women’s squad from MAC member Central Michigan will see the course again next month. The CMU women scored a second-place team finish with 68 points, holding off the Bulls by 21. UB has seen MAC competition in all three of it’s meets this season, traveling to league rivals Akron and Toledo earlier this year. Annual Paul Short Invitational Next on the Slate UB travels to the Lehigh University's Paul Short Invitational next Saturday. One of the biggest meets of the season for the Bulls in terms of competition and field size, the Paul Short meet will give the squads a chance to see top opposition with 43 men’s teams and 36 women’s teams expected in the field, including Big East, Ivy League and Patriot League members. The men’s collegiate race is slated to start at 2:00 pm with the women following at 2:45 pm. An open division men’s and women’s competition will also be contested following the collegiate section.
