Veith Wins MAC Academic Award
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's cross country sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week. The award was announced by the league office in Cleveland earlier in the week. Veith, a sophomore chemistry major with a 3.879 grade point average, won her first collegiate cross country individual title on September 16 at the Toledo Invitational. She crossed the finish line on the 5K course in 17:48, cutting more than a minute off the time she posted on the same course last season as a freshman. The Bulls finished second to Big Ten member Northwestern in the team scoring, placing ahead of MAC rivals Toledo and Eastern Michigan. She led the squad this past Saturday as the Bulls hosted the UB Stampede Invitational. Veith was UB's top runner, finishing third in 18:28.30 along a soggy 5K course at Beaver Island State Park. A pair of Cornell runners placed ahead of Veith. The Bulls finished fourth in the team scoring behind Cornell, Central Michigan and Colgate. Veith is the second UB athlete to earn the honor this season. Football defensive back Jesse Imes (Cincinnati, OH/Kings Mills) won the honor earlier in the month. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
