Men Fourth, Women Fifth in Canada

The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams raced Friday afternoon at the 26th Annual Western Ontario Invitational held at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ontario.

The Bulls' men's team finished fourth in the 10-kilometer race with 134 total points. West Virginia, the only other U.S. school in the field took the championship with 32 points. UB's women placed fifth with 126 points trailing champion West Virginia who totaled 42 points.

UB's top men's finisher was Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) placing eighth among the 73 runners entered. David completed the 10K course in 32:25 in the closely contested race. Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was 13th individually finishing in 33:10. West Virginia's Steve Bohan won the individual title in 32:03.

Also placing for the Bulls' men were Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 26th in 33:53, Jeff Czyz (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) in 45th in 34:56 and Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) in 46th in 35:06.

Danielle Morrell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley) led the women's team crossing the finish line 14th in 18:57 in the women's 5K competition. Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) were 20th and 21st respectively, finishing in 19:12 and 19:15. Beth Wightman of Ontario's Queen's University took top honors winning the race in 17:55.

Placing 35th and 36th respectively for the Bulls were Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) in 19:46 and Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) in 19:47.

Men Finish Fifth at St. John Fisher

The men's team also placed fifth in an eleven team field Saturday at the 2000 Cardinal Classic held at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

The Bulls scored 117 team points to place behind chamption Houghton College who totaled 33. Oswego State (62), Alfred University (102) and Buffalo State College (105) also finished ahead of the Bulls.

Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/Fulton) finished the 8K course in 29:15 to lead the team. Onile White (Bronx, NY/Dewitt Clinton) was 21st in 30:04. Houghton's Patrick Weaver took individual honors crossing the finish line first in 27:36.

Ben Moskel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) was 25th in 30:28 and Kevin Brady (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) crossed 28th in 30:38 for the Bulls. Kirk Costion (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) placed 36th in 31:07 while Matt Bowers (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) was 44th in 32:01.

Lakefront Invitational Next Up

The Bulls will race in Chicago on Saturday at the Lakefront Invitational. Both squads participated at the event last year that features many of the top programs in the Midwest and includes several Mid-American Conference foe. Several Bulls runners set season-best times at the meet last season.

  • Women placed 5th of 12 teams, 126 points

  • Men placed fifth of 11 teams, 117 points
