GRAND ISLAND, NY – The University at Buffalo cross country team pulled out a stunning two-point victory over Cornell on Saturday to take the men's team title at the UB Stampede Invitational at Beaver Island State Park. The Bulls (28 points) placed the first three runners across the finish line ahead of the Big Red (30 points) to provide the margin of victory. Ten men's squads comprised the field.

In the women's race, UB placed fourth with 89 points in the 11-team field. Cornell took first place with 20 points. A light drizzle during the women's race followed by clearing skies for the men's race created a wet, spongy surface on the grass course.

UB senior Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) took the top spot in the men's 8K race. McKenna finished in 27:04.90. A pair of UB runners finished immediately behind McKenna. Senior Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished in 27:10.00 for second place and junior Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was third in 27:14.20 to hold off Cornell's top runner, Peter Loy, who finished fourth in 27:15.80.

"The men ran aggressively," said head coach Vicki Mitchell. "They pulled out the win which was nice and a little bit of a surprise and the weather held up for us."

Other UB men's runners to score points included Chuck Laderer (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) in ninth place in 27:42.60 and Dave Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) in 13th place in 27:45.40.

Cornell runners took four of the top five spots in the women's 5K race to open the meet. Toni-Lynn Salucci took first place for Cornell in 18:13.70. Nyam Kagwima of Cornell was second in 18:16.60. UB sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was the highest finisher for the Bulls, taking third place in 18:28.30.

Junior Alekesanda Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School of Poznan) was UB's second women's runner to finish, placing 15th in 19:34.20. Other UB women's scorers included Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) in 20:06.00 for 24th place, Christine Sprehe (Boston, NY/Orchard Park) in 20:34.30 for 34th place and Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) in 20:43.40 for 38th place.

"Mary Veith ran a nice race," said Mitchell. "I was pleased with her."

Big Four schools Niagara, Canisius and St. Bonaventure also sent athletes to the meet. The Purple Eagles were third in the men's meet (107 points) and fifth (134 points) among the women. The Golden Griffins finished fourth (112 points) among the men and seventh (191 points) in the women's field. The Bonnies placed seventh (164 points) for the men and eighth (242 points) among the women.

UB travels to the Lehigh University's Paul Short Invitational next Saturday. First race is slated to start at 2:00 pm.

Men's team scores: UB 28, Cornell 30, Niagara 107, Canisius 112, LeMoyne 153, Erie CC 156, St. Bonaventure 164, Keuka 240, Medaille 278, Hilbert 295.
