Cross Country Weekly Release - Sept. 18, 2000


Women Third, Men Fourth at Fordham

The University at Buffalo women's and men's cross country teams placed third and fourth respectively in Saturday's Ram Cross Country Invitational hosted by Fordham University and held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

The Bulls' women scored 93 points to place third in the nine team field behind a pair of Ivy League squads, Yale, with a winning total of 17 and Cornell at 38. The men's squad scored 104 points earning fourth place among 12 teams trailing Cornell (15) and the second place tie between Fordham and Rutgers (87 each).

The Bulls' top women's finisher was Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) who finished the 5 kilometer course in 19:03.0 to place 13th individually. Danielle Morrell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley) was 18th in 19:14.9 and Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) was 23rd in 19:32.3. Yale runners dominated the field with the Bulldogs taking five of the top six spots. Kate O'Neil won the race in 18:01.2 beating out twin sister Laura who crossed the line in 18:02.3.

Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was the first UB men's runner across the tape placing ninth in 26:05.9 for the 8 kilometers. Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) finished right behind Ludden in 10th at 26:12.9. Cornell grabbed the top eight spots en route to its team victory with Max King taking the individual honors in 25:28.1.

Runners Slash Top Performances

Three other Bulls women's runners crossed the finish line of their 5K course in twenty minutes. Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) was 29th in 19:47.8, Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) was 35th in 20:00.5 and Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica) was 36th in 20:02.1. Also three improved their performances from last week's UB Invitational by thirty seconds each.

Other Bulls' men to score at the Ram Invitational included Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) who placed 30th in 27:17.7, Tom Stuart (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) who finished 38th in 27:49.3. Jeff Czyz (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) finished 40th in 28:08.4 to complete UB's top five.

Western Ontario, St. John Fisher Invites Up Next

The Bulls will race twice this weekend with some runners competing at the Western Ontario Invitational in London, Ontario on Friday Sept. 22 and others racing at the St. John Fisher Invitational in Rochester on Saturday Sept. 23.
