Bulls Race at Spartan Invitational

The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams got a look at some strong competition from Big Ten and Mid-American Conference schools as the Bulls raced in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday afternoon. There was no team scoring at the meet. The fields included MAC members Central Michigan, Miami (OH) and Western Michigan as well as Big Ten squads Michigan and the host Spartans. Several Division III and club programs also competed.

The UB women were paced by senior Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) making her season debut after sitting out the Tommy Evans Invitational on September 6. Veith completed the women's 6K course under overcast and rainy conditions in 22:18 to place 13th in the field of 163 runners. Veith finished behind eight Michigan State runners and three Miami (OH) placers as those two teams dominated the top ten. The Bulls also had three other women finish the longer than usual course in 23 minutes. Senior Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) was UB’s second finisher in 23:02 with junior Nicole Soblosky (Colonie, NY/Colonie) right behind in 23:03 as the duo finished 32nd and 34th, respectively. Senior Alex Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School of Poznan) finished 43rd overall in 23:24.

Men Finish Within the Pack

In the men's 8K race, UB sophomore Jacob Hagen (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) paced the Bulls with a 45th-place finish in 26:44. The men's field consisted of a total of 174 entrants. Hagen cut 42 seconds off last season's pace on the East Lansing course. As a freshman in 2007 he finished 70th in 27:26. Ryan Bloom (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) finished 58th in 27:09 as UB's second male finisher. Freshman Dylan Conway (Commack, NY/Hauppauge) , junior Scott Dickover (Middletown, NY/Middletown) and freshman John Inzina (Clarence, NY/Clarence) also crossed the finish line in under 28 minutes for the Bulls. The three also finished in the upper half of field.

Bulls Host Annual Race This Weekend

The Bulls host the UB Stampede Invitational on Saturday, September 20 at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. The women's 5K race is slated for noon with the men's 8K race following at 12:45 pm. The UB men won last season’s team title while the UB women finished second to Colgate. UB runners took the top slots individually with Mary Veith capturing the women’s race and Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) claiming the men’s competition. Expected to compete at Saturday’s meet are Akron, Bucknell, Binghamton, Robert Morris and RIT. Local schools Daemen, Erie CC, Hilbert, Medaille and Niagara will also be on hand. Women’s teams from Colgate and D’Youville will also compete.
