Koeppel Wins MAC Cross Country Award
BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo women's cross country athlete Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Women's Runner of the Week. The award was announced by the league office in Cleveland. Koeppel, a senior, earned the award following her individual title at last Saturday's Tommy Evans Invitational, UB's season-opening meet, in Akron, OH. Koeppel completed the five kilometer course in 18:21 to finish first in a field of 40 runners. She had no trouble breaking away from the rest of the field, finishing the race 25 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Akron's Brandi Schoeppner (18:46). Her finish was five seconds better than last year's 18:26 when she finished second overall. The UB women scored 29 points to win the team title and hold off second-place Akron (37). The team victory by the Bulls marked the first time that UB finished ahead of a consistently strong Akron squad. The UB women were second to the Zips at last season's meet. They placed fourth in 2002 and third in 2001. The Bulls are in action this Saturday at Toledo's Central Collegiate Meet with racing beginning
at 11:45 am. |
