Bulls Stuck in the Middle at Spiked Shoe

Rain and temperatures in the upper 50s dictated the racing conditions at Friday’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Penn State Blue-White Golf Course as the Bulls finished in the middle of the pack in both meets. The UB men placed fifth among nine teams with 134 points while the women finished sixth in a 10-team meet scoring 178 points.

In the men’s meet, run at 5.2 miles, UB’s Jacob Hagen placed 18th among 144 runners. Hagen completed the course in 27:13. Also finishing among the top 30 for the Bulls were Dylan Conway and Ryan Bloom. Conway crossed the finish line in 27:29 to finish 25th overall and Bloom finished 29th in 27:34. The 5.2 mile course is a slightly longer distance than is typically run in men’s cross country. Men usually compete at 8K or the equivalent of five miles.

Freshman Sanders Heads the Women

Running at a distance of 6K, the UB women were paced by freshman Katie Sanders (Rochester, NY/Spencerport). Sanders finished in 22:57 to place 25th overall among 125 racers. Jackie Cavalluzzo was the next finisher for the Bulls in 23:39 to take 38th place. UB’s top finisher at the previous week’s Tommy Evans Invitational, Jackie Bozich was the third finisher for the Bulls in 24:00 to place 46th overall.

The Stampede is Coming

UB hosts its annual Stampede Invitational on Saturday, September 19. Held at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, it is UB’s lone home meet of the season. The Bulls will host men’s and women’s programs from regional institutions Hilbert, Niagara and the University of Rochester. Mid-American Conference rival Akron and St. Francis (PA) as well as women’s programs from Cornell and Texas Lutheran will join the field. Also entered will be the UB club cross country program. The men’s 8K race begins at noon with the women’s 5K race starting at 12:45 pm.
