OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams were in action Saturday at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, OH. UB's men placed fourth in the five-team field with 79 points, just 10 points out of second place. Meanwhile, the women's squad placed fifth among seven squads with a total score of 101 points.

Miami's men (19) and Michigan's women (33) took the team titles on Saturday. In the men's meet, Cumberland (69), Ball State (70) and UB (79) contended for second behind the RedHawks, who won their own invitational meet for the eighth consecutive time. In the women's field, Michigan cruised to the win by placing five runners among the top 11 finishers. Miami (67), Ball State (76), Akron (82), UB (101), Gettysburg (145) and Cumberland (224) completed the team scoring.

Among UB racers, junior Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was the top individual finisher. Koeppel completed the women's 6K course in 18:07.26 to take seventh among 75 runners. Freshman Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) placed 11th in a 52-runner field in the men's 8K race, crossing the finish line in 26:25.75.

Other women's scorers for the Bulls included Peg Melonic (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) in 18:17.19 for 12th place, Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) in 19:02.62 for 23rd place, Kayleigh Wheeless (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) in 19:38.29 for 33rd place and Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) in 19:58.14 for 37th place.

Joining McKenna in the scoring column for the UB men were Andy Wigton (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) in 13th and 14th place, respectively. Wigton completed the 8K course in 26:39.39 while Beatty followed in 26:48.42. Ben Cady (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) finished in 26:57.81 to take 17th place and Nate Lockett (Lansing, NY/Lansing) took 26th in 27:36.86. Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) just missed the scoring column as the sixth man across the finish line for the Bulls in 27:42.13, just behind Lockett in 27th place.

Both squads will now take next weekend off before heading to the Bronx for the Iona Meet of Champions races on September 27. Race time is slated for 10:00 am at Van Cortlandt Park.
