Bulls Open 2006 Campaign at Akron Meet

The University at Buffalo’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2006 campaign on Saturday with the Tommy Evans Invitational at the University of Akron. Both squads finished second to the host Zips. The UB men scored 44 points to place behind Akron’s 31 with Youngstown State (61) and John Carroll (96) rounding out the field. In the women’s competition, the Bulls compiled 41 points to the host Zips’ 25 with John Carroll (72), Cleveland State (114) and Youngstown State (129) also competing.

Welby Leads Men’s Finishers

In the men’s four-mile race, Akron runners took four of the top six spots including individual titlist Jason Headman, completing the course in 21:06. UB’s top finisher was senior David Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) as he finished fifth in 21:43. Joining Welby among the Bulls’ finishers in the top 10 were freshman Jason Ayr (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in seventh in 21:52, senior Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) in 22:05.40 for ninth and sophomore Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 22:06 to finish 10th.

Other UB men’s finishers included freshmen Matt Kaiser (Woodstock, NY/Onteora) and Scott Dickover (Middletown, NY/Middletown) and sophomore John Nicotera (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley). Kaiser placed 13th in 22:23 while Dickover was 15th in 22:26. Nicotera turned in a time of 22:49 to finish 20th in the 34-racer field, completing Buffalo’s lineup.

Bulls Finish Third, Fourth and Fifth in Women’s Race

UB runners finished third, fourth and fifth in the women’s race, contested at 5K. Junior Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School of Poznan) placed third in 19:38. Senior Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) took fourth in 19:47. Sophomore Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) finished fifth in 19:50. Akron’s Colleen Moran won the women’s title in 19:14, five seconds ahead of teammate Sediah Erskine.

Freshman Christine Sprehe (Boston, NY/Orchard Park) placed 13th in 20:37 while Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), a former four-year member of UB’s rowing squad running in her first cross country competition, finished 16th in 20:54. Rounding out UB’s scorers was freshman Kristin Clark (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) in 21:25 for 21st place. Forty runners competed in the women’s race.

Toledo Invitational Next on the Slate

The Bulls return to Ohio next weekend for the University of Toledo Invitational. Joining the Bulls at the meet will be Northwestern, Manhattan, Cleveland State, Tiffin and Defiance, as well as MAC members Eastern Michigan and the host Rockets. The women’s 5K race will begin at 9:45 am with the men’s 8K race to follow at 10:30 am.
