Bulls Open Cross Country Season at Tommy Evans Meet
AKRON, OH—The University at Buffalo’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2006 campaign on Saturday with the Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by the University of Akron. Both squads finished second to the host Zips as the men scored 44 points to place behind Akron’s 31 while the women compiled 41 to the host Zips’ 25 points. In the men’s four-mile race, Akron runners took four of the top six spots including individual titlist Jason Headman, completing the course in 21:06. UB’s top finisher was senior David Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) as he finished fifth in 21:43. Joining Welby among the Bulls’ finishers in the top 10 were freshman Jason Ayr (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in seventh in 21:52, senior Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) in 22:05.40 for ninth and sophomore Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 22:06 to finish 10th.
UB runners finished third, fourth and fifth in the women’s race, contested at 5K. Junior Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School of Poznan) placed third in 19:38. Senior Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) took fourth in 19:47. Sophomore Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) finished fifth in 19:50. Akron’s Colleen Moran won the women’s title in 19:14, five seconds ahead of teammate Sediah Erskine. The Bulls return to Ohio next weekend for the University of Toledo Invitational. |
