Cross Country Squads Open SeasonAKRON, OH The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country squads opened the 2001 season Saturday at the Tommy Evans Invitational meet in Akron, Ohio. The Bulls' men finished a close second to Kent State, 30-28, in a three-team race, while UB's women took third in a four-team field with 68 points. UB's Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won the men's four-mile race in 20:44.10 to finish 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Gareth Price of Kent State. Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) placed fourth (20:59.90) and fifth (21:01.80) respectively. In the women's 5,000 meter race, Kent State sewed up the team competition placing seven runners in the top eight spots. Akron's Bobbie Hardbarger took individual honors winning in 17:57.30. Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) was UB's top finisher crossing the line in 19:36.90 for tenth place. Freshman Tarynn Knarr (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) turned in a 20:00.10 clocking to place 13th overall. Both teams return to the Buckeye State next Saturday to compete in the Ohio University
