BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's cross country squad presented its team awards for the 2005 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Millennium Hotel on May 2.
Head coach Vicki Mitchell made the following presentations: Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was selected as the Top Newcomer; Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) earned the Most Improved Player Award; Kelli O'Brien (Clifton Springs, NY/Manchester-Shortsville) received the Coaches' Award; and Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) was named Most Outstanding.
Mary Veith | The Top Newcomer Award is presented to the individual student-athlete who distinguishes herself as the most talented new player on the team or the individual who accomplishes the greatest achievements as a first-year player. Veith appeared in eight races for the Bulls with three top-15 finishes. She had a top 5K time of 18:52 at the Central Collegiate Invitational in Toledo and finished second at the UB Open.
Kate Kohout | The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or improvement in her performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Kohout competed in eight races with two top-10 finishes. She placed 17th in 18:59 for her best 5K time at the Central Collegiate Invitational.
Kelli O'Brien | The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. O'Brien, named the Top Newcomer in 2004, raced in five contests in 2005. She finished with a top 5K mark of 19:17 at the Mid-American Conference Championships and had a top 6K time of 22:52.7 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
Jen Jezorski | The Most Outstanding Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution to the accomplishments of the team through her skills and leadership.
