Healy, Leonard, McClure, McKenna earn accolades
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's cross country squad presented its team awards for the 2005 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Millennium Hotel on May 2.
Head coach Vicki Mitchell made the following presentations: Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was selected as the Top Newcomer; Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) earned the Most Improved Player Award; Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) received the Coaches' Award; and Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was named Most Outstanding for the second consecutive year.
Dan Healy | The Top Newcomer Award is presented to the individual student-athlete who distinguishes himself as the most talented new player on the team or the individual who accomplishes the greatest achievements as a first-year player. Healy competed in eight races for the Bulls in 2005. His top 8K time was 26:27 to finish 37th in a 77-runner field at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Andy Leonard | The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or improvement in his performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Leonard was in eight races for the Bulls and had three top-15 finishes on the season. His best 8K time was 25:05 at the highly-competitve Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. He finished 78th among 299 runners at the race. Leonard also earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC squad at the end of the season.
Chris McClure | The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. McClure saw action in eight races in 2005. His top 8K mark was 26:14, set at the Paul Short meet.
Dan McKenna | The Most Outstanding Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution to the accomplishments of the team through his skills and leadership. McKenna, last year's Most Outstanding and the Top Newcomer in 2003, was UB's top performer earning five top-10 finishes and placing no lower than 19th in any of his eight races in 2005. He won two individual titles, the season-opening Tommy Evans Invitational at Akron and the UB Open and placed second at Toledo's Central Collegiate Invitational. McKenna earned first-team All-MAC honors with his seventh-place finish at the league championships in Toledo and All-Northeast recognition with his 19th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals in Boston. His top 8K time of the season was at the Paul Short Invitational in 24:24 and during the year, he was twice selected as the MAC's Men's Runner of the Week.
