UB Women's Cross Country Announces Awards

Jezorski, Housel, Koeppel earn accolades

BUFFALO, NY ­ The University at Buffalo women's cross country squad presented its team awards for the 2003 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Four Points Sheraton on April 27.

Head coach Vicki Mitchell made the following presentations: Jennifer Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) earned the Most Improved Player Award; Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) received the Coaches' Award; and Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst)was named the team's Most Valuable Player.

The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or improvement in her performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Jezorski raced in eight meets in the 2003 season with a fourth-place finish at the UB Open in 19:45.8 for 5K. She finished 43rd at the Mid-American Conference Championships in a season-best 5K time of 18:52.9.

The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. Housel appeared in eight races, scoring a ninth-place finish at the William & Mary Tribe Open in 22:55.68 for her top 6K time of the season. She set a best 5K mark of 19:31.9 at the MAC Championships.

The Most Valuable Player Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution to the accomplishments of the team through her skills and leadership. Koeppel was UB's top finisher in all eight of the meets she entered last season, winning two and placing second in another with five top-10 finishes. Koeppel set her best 5K time of the season at the MAC Championships in 17:50.3, placing ninth and earning All-MAC Second Team honors. She also earned All-Region honors with her 21st-place showing at the season-ending NCAA Northeast Regional Meet. Koeppel set a top 6K mark of 21:38.52 at the Paul Short Invitational.

The Bulls completed their season with a ninth-place finish at the MAC Championships and a 16th-place showing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet.
