Seven Rowers Named CRCA Scholar Athletes

Award given to student-athletes who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

BUFFALO, NY - Seven members of the University at Buffalo rowing squad were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athletes for the 2009 season. To qualify for this honor, a student must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, have completed at least one year of eligibility and must have rowed in her institution’s NCAA eligible boats for a minimum of 75 percent of her school’s spring races. Most importantly, all eligible student-athletes must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

The Bulls have four members from their varsity program honored and three members from the lightweight program. Sasha Bailey (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Ashley Hanhurst (Highland, NY/Highland) from the Varsity Eight boat were both honored as well as Francisca Nwoke (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest) from the Second Varsity Eight boat. Also honored was Britt Marshall (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), who has served as coxswain on both the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight this year. Bailey is in her second year with a 3.616 GPA in health and human services, while Hanhurst just finished her sophomore year with a 3.778 in nursing. Nwoke, a junior, has a 3.706 GPA in exercise science, while Marshall, also a junior, has a 3.699 GPA in biomedical sciences.

The Lightweight program had three selections, including Marshall’s sister, Emily Marshall (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda). A sophomore, Marshall has a 3.588 GPA in management. Amanda Harwood (Old Forge, NY/Town of Webb) was honored with her 3.704 GPA in nursing, while Andrea Patterson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was honored with a 3.50 GPA in biomedical sciences and chemistry.

The Bulls are coming off their second straight victory at the Dad Vail Regatta where they won the Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy and the Jack Bratten trophy as the overall point champions.
