Varsity Eight Wins Knecht Cup

Bulls come home with 27 medal winners as three boats place

CAMDEN, NJ – The University at Buffalo rowing team completed its most successful Knecht Cup in the school history as UB placed three boats, including the Varsity Eight boat, which claimed the Knecht Cup by winning its Grand Final. Picking up silver medals were the Second Varsity Eight and the Frosh/Novice Eight.

The Varsity Eight boat, which consisted of coxswain Britt Marshall, Lauren Sexton, Melina DiCosimo, Tara Rudkoski, Bridgette Yannes, Ashley Hanhurst, Sasha Bailey, Sam Masucci and Caitlin Streicher clocked in at 7:02.5, marking the third straight race that the Bulls finished with the top time. UB defeated Rhode Island, who finished about four seconds back. UB also defeated fellow CAA rowing schools Drexel and Delaware.

The Second Varsity Eight of coxswain Alison Sheehan, Kate Garofalo, Megan Bayley, Alana Sharpe, Francisca Nwoke, Lindsay DiCosimo, Amanda Garbacz, Patricia Arcuri and Brittany Ronald finished their race in 7:20.6 to pick up second place, as they finished about three and a half seconds behind Rhode Island. Fellow CAA rowing school George Mason was also in that race with the Bulls.

The Frosh/Novice Eight boat also place second in race on Saturday. The boat of coxswain Tarynn Weightman, Stephanie Szymanski, Samantha Barrett, Dakota Smith, Jacklyn Postulka, Alexandra Condon, Rebecca Rayter, Rachel Cuthbert and Elizabeth Sandy finished in 7:58.4, which was about seven seconds behind Old Dominion.

UB will be back in action next Saturday at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Philadelphia, PA.
