Bulls Open Spring Against Louisville And Duke

UB puts forth top results against some of the nation’s best

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo rowing team recently returned from its Spring Training trip to Oak Ridge, TN where the Bulls concluded the week by facing off against Louisville and Duke. Despite only being on the water for a week, the Bulls put up top results against team’s who had been practicing outside for much longer.

UB’s Varsity Eight boat turned in a second-place finish in its race as it finished just under eight seconds behind Louisville at 6:51.16. It was an impressive performance for the Bulls as Louisville’s Varsity Eight boat is ranked 20th in the nation by USRowing/CRCA. UB’s Varsity Eight boat consisted of coxswain Alison Sheehan (St. Catherines, Ontario/Denis Morris), Kate Garofalo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart), Tara Rudkowski (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), Sasha Bailey (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), Ashley Hanhurst (Highland, NY/Highland), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catherines, Ontario/Denis Morris), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) and Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul). Louisville finished at 6:43.92, while Duke finished in third place at 6:56.53.

The Bulls also claimed second and third place in the Varsity Four competition as the Buffalo “A” boat finished in 7:57.73, just five seconds behind Louisville. That boat consisted of coxswain Britt Marshall (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), Patricia Arcuri (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Shenita McLean (Buffalo, NY/Leonardo DaVinci), Alana Sharpe (St. Catherines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe) and Mary Karl (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown) and they finished about two second ahead of the Buffalo “B” boat.

The Bulls also picked up victories in both the Novice Four race and the Frosh/Novice Eight race. In the Novice Four race, UB won by over 15 seconds, while the Frosh/Novice Eight race saw the Bulls win by over one minute.

UB will be back in action on Saturday, March 28 as they head to Bloomington, IN to take on Indiana, Dayton and Eastern Michigan. The Varsity Eight race against the Eagles will be for the Harvey Cup.
