UB Crews Finish Fall Season at Foot of the Charles Races

Wintry weather dictates conditions in Boston

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The University at Buffalo crew squad completed the fall portion of the schedule with the Foot of the Charles Regatta. The weather conditions, however, were not very conducive to top-notch rowing as snow and gusty north winds forced the race course to be considerably shortened. Buffalo was the only squad not from the Boston area to compete in the regatta. Crews from Northeastern, Boston University, Radcliffe, MIT and Boston College also competed while Brown and Dartmouth crews were unable to make the trip due to the hazardous driving conditions.

UB fielded six entries in the three races, with the best showing a fourth-place finish by the A squad in the novice eight competition. The UB B entry placed 14th among the 16 teams. UB’s A entry finished in 11:55.7. The team included coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), stroke seat Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), seventh seat Mia Pavletic (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central), sixth seat Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), fifth seat Jill Harclerode (Portland, OR/Westview), fourth seat Crystal Byrnes (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs), third seat Darcie Bryant (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), second seat Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and bow seat Beth Gaworecki (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker). The B entry turned in a 14:14.6 clocking. The boat included coxswain Kristin Lim (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), stroke seat Devin Broadwell (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman), seventh seat Karen Leonard (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), sixth seat Nicole Kobel (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown), fifth seat Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), fourth seat Elly Henderson (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), third seat Sarah Stamm (Rosendale, NY/Kingston), second seat Michele Davis (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial) and bow seat Lexi Miller (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg). Northeastern and Boston University ran away from the field with the Huskies taking first in 11:13.6 followed by the Terriers in 11:15.2 with Radcliffe in third at 11:31.8, 24 seconds ahead of the fourth-place Bulls.

In the varsity four race, UB’s A and B entries turned in nearly identical times with the B squad a second faster than the A team. In the 21 team field, which also included lightweight entries, UB’s B entry was 12th in 12:40.0 while the A entry finished 13th in 12:41.3. UB’s lightweight four squad also competed in the race and placed 16th in 13:03.2. The UB B team consisted of coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), stroke seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s), third seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), second seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) and bow seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima). The A squad included coxswain Sheralyn Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park), stroke seat Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), third seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), second seat Sandra Kisil (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale SS) and bow seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland). The lightweight entry consisted of coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), stroke seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), third seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), second seat Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and bow seat Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy). Northeastern’s A entry won the race in 11:53.5, five seconds ahead of second-place Boston University (11:58.4).

UB’s lone entry in the varsity eight race took a ninth-place finish among 12 squads in a time of 12:17.8. MIT’s top entry won the race in 11:22.6, a second and a half ahead of Boston University (11:24.0). The Bulls’ boat included coxswain Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin), stroke seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), seventh seat Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer), sixth seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), fifth seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), fourth seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), third seat Katherine Laub (Batavia, NY/Batavia), second seat Alexis Grates (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) and bow seat Lindsay Yonko (Apalachin, NY/Vestal).

With the head races completed, the Bulls will start their training for the upcoming spring sprint races. UB will head to Miami for winter training in January and Austin, TX for spring workouts in March. The Bulls open the spring competition schedule on April 2 in the same Boston waters against several of the squads that they saw in the Foot of the Charles including Northeastern, Boston College and MIT as well as Dartmouth. The following day, the Bulls will race against squads from Harvard and Rhode Island.
