Bulls Post Top Results at Head of the Fish
SARATOGA, NY The University at Buffalo women's crew team posted a first-place finish as well as three second-places and a third-place showing in the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga. UB was the highest-scoring collegiate entry at the event with 116.50 total points, placing third overall behind top squads from Saratoga High School and the St. Catharines Rowing Club. The Bulls tallied one first-place showing, winning the Lightweight 4 race in 15:17.02, nearly 30 seconds ahead of second-place Saratoga High School. UB's entry consisted of coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), stroke seat Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), third seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), second seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) and bow seat Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Eleven teams competed in the race. UB also picked up second-place finishes in the Novice 8 and 4 races and the Lightweight 8 race. In the Novice 8 event, UB's A squad finished in 14:27.97, five seconds behind the winning squad from Syracuse (14:22.25) in a 38-team race. The entry included coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), stroke seat Crystal Byrnes (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs), seventh seat Darcie Bryant (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), sixth seat Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), fifth seat Mia Pavletic (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central), fourth seat Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), third seat Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), second seat Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and bow seat Beth Gaworecki (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker). The Bulls also posted a 12th-place finish in the race with a B entry in 15:54.53. In the Novice 4 competition,UB finished second in 14:44.20, behind only Greenwich Academy (14:27.11) as 39 entries took to the water. Devendorf coxswained the team with remainder of the lineup consisting of stroke seat Byrnes, third seat Bryant, second seat Cyr and bow seat Pavletic. The Bulls also took a B squad to a sixth-place finish in 15:23.03. The Lightweight 8 was second in 13:14.33 to Saratoga High School's 12:56.86 in a seven-team race. UB's entry included Potts as the coxswain with stroke seat Barnum, seventh seat Corey, sixth seat Barrell, fifth seat Mary Szvoren (East Aurora, NY/Buffalo Seminary), fourth seat Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), third seat Gaworecki, second seat Jen Victor (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and bow seat Michael. UB posted two entries in the Open/Championship 8 event scoring third- and a fifth-place finishes among 28 teams. The A squad was third in 12:35.79, trailing only Massachusetts (12:23.31) and Colgate (12:32.23) while the B team finished in 12:43.99, nine-tenths of a second behind fourth-place Williams. Representing the A entry were coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park), stroke seat Sandra Kisil (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale SS), seventh seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), sixth seat Corrine Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), fifth seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), fourth seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), third seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), second seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and bow seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's). The Bulls also had three entries in the Open/Championship 4 competition. The A entry was fourth in 15:03.86 with the B entry seventh in 15:22.59 and the C entry entry 11th in 15:35.10. There were 46 entries in the competition. UB crews will complete the fall season with the Foot of the Charles races in Boston on November 13. |
