UB Rowing Takes Seventh In Youth Eights

UB has another strong showing at the Head of the Charles

BOSTON, MA - The UB women's rowing team competed in the 41st annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday and pulled away yet another positive showing. The two-day event promised many head-to-head opportunities for teams to scout out the competition in the young fall season that is preparing them for the spring season which begins in March.

UB, under head coach Rudy Wieler, entered two boats in this year's regatta which included a guaranteed entry for the Championship Eight boat, because the boat placed in the top five percent in the collegiate eight last year. The squad finished fourth out of 50 entries in last year's race.

This year, the Championship Eight finished a respectable 36th out of 47 Sunday, pulling away from notable schools such as Radcliffe and West Virginia with an overall time of 18:34.603. Princeton University took home top honors with a 16:34.633 adjusted time, as they placed first in the event, as well as two of the remaining top five. The Championship Eight boat was rowed by coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park SS), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul's), Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Nicki Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), and Jill Harclerode (Portland, OR/Westview).

Along with the Championship Eight, the Bulls also competed in the Youth Eight with a flowering field of 57. The octal force of coxswain Adriane Wotawa-Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Miranda Robinson (Otego, NY/Unatego), Laura Sherman (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central), Nicole Miller (Buffalo,NY/Williamsville North) and Amanda MacKeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute) charged forward and pulled blade-for-blade to finish seventh overall with an overall time of 20:17.337, almost within a second of top-placing Yale University at 19:14.404.

The rowers conclude their fall season as they next compete in the Head of the Fish in Saratoga Springs, NY on October 29.
