Crew Squads Post Top Marks In Boston

UB's Varsity 8 posts fifth-place finish to lead Bulls in Head of the Charles

BOSTON, MA ­ The University at Buffalo's women's crew team sent three squads to the 38th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston with impressive results turned in by each entry.

UB's Varsity 8 boat competed in the Collegiate Women's race and finished fifth in a 34-team field. The Bulls posted a combined time of 17:51.498. UB's entry consisted of stroke seat Victoria Kolomiets (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), seventh seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ont./Sir Winston Churchill), sixth seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), fifth seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), fourth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), third seat Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), second seat Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)) and bow seat Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie) with coxswain Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy Angels). UB finished five seconds behind the fourth-place finishers from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (17:46.511). Lehigh (17:23.549) won the title with West Virginia (17:28.489) and Louisville (17:29.554) following close behind.

The two other UB entries, the Club 8 and Club 4 squads, consisted of a mixture of varsity and novice rowers. The Club 8 entry finished in the middle of the pack, placing 25th in a 59-team race with a time of 20:58.476. The squad consisted of stroke seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), seventh seat Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood), sixth seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), fifth seat Lauren Dunn (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East), fourth seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), third seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), second seat Margaret Siller (Buffalo, NY/Hutch-Tech) and bow seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) with coxswain Tina LaFountain (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). A squad from the Ottawa Rowing Club won the title in 19:16.455.

UB's Club 4 team raced to a 24th-place showing in a 51-team field. The Bulls posted a combined time of 18:16.518 as Tennessee won the race in 17:07.493. UB's rowers included stroke seat Margaret Cote (Grosse Ile, MI/Grosse Ile), third seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), second seat Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and bow seat Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) with coxswain Dawn Kavanaugh (Grand Island, NY/Nardin Academy).

The next action for the Bulls will be Saturday's Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga, NY. First boats hit the water at 8:00 am.
