UB Rowers Finish Sixth at Head of the Charles

Women's crew team places near top of the standings in the Collegiate Eight race

BOSTON, MA ­ The famed Charles River in Boston provided the setting for Sunday's Head of the Charles Regatta as the University at Buffalo fielded one entry in the prestigious competition and came away with a sixth-place finish. The Bulls were among 38 boats that raced in the Collegiate Eight event of the regatta that attracted top teams from throughout the United States and Ontario.

The entry for the Bulls consisted of coxswain Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy Angels), stroke seat Andrea Lysiuk (St. Catharines, Ontario/Holy Cross), seventh seat Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), sixth seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), fifth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), fourth seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), third seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), second seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's) and bow seat Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood). The Bulls completed the more than two-mile Charles River course that wound past three college campuses (MIT, Boston University and Harvard) in an adjusted time of 17:24.769 to finish sixth overall. Queen's University of Canada won the event in 16:47.321. Louisville was second in 17:01.362, followed by teams from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (17:05.304), West Virginia (17:09.490), Lehigh (17:10.413) and UB.

Sunday was the final day of the two-day meet, now in its 39th year, that was expected to attract more than 350,000 spectators.
