Busy Week for Rowers at Head of the Niagara and Stonehurst Regattas

The women's crew squad was in action last weekend with a pair of events. On Saturday the Bulls competed at the Head of the Niagara Regatta hosted by the West Side Rowing Club. The team also competed at Sunday's Stonehurst Regatta in Rochester.

The Bulls took two first place wins at the Head of the Niagara event, taking the lightweight eight and varsity eight events. The winning light eight team consisted of coxswain Katie Johnson and rowers Andrea Junkans, Courtney Kane, Jessica O'Grady, Allison Junkans, Becky Mohr, Karey Smolar, Victoria Kolomiets and Janet Lane. The varsity eight included coxswain Tina LaFountain and rowers Tracy Torelli, Margaret Siller, Michelle Barry, Tracy Clarke, Sarah Giardenelli, Sarah Vieira, Katy Frank and Stacy Serafin. UB also finished with sixth and seventh place showings in the varsity eight race.

At the Stonehurst Regatta, two races were held in each category. The morning event was a 5,000 meter race with a 1,500 meter sprint race in the afternoon. The sprint race was then multiplied by three and combined with the 5,000 meter time to determine a winner. The Bulls finished second of four entries in the lightweight eights, thirty seconds behind Mercyhurst and beating out teams from William and Mary and Binghamton. UB's light eight squad was coxed by Katie Johnson and consisted of the same rowers that had won Saturday's Head of the Niagara race. Two UB entries finished in the heavyweight eights as UB's A squad was 11th while the B team was 20th in the 22-team college field. Six squads also competed in the race in the open category and were scored separately. UB's A team was coxed by Tina LaFountain and consisted of the same team members as Saturday's winning Head of the Niagara varsity entry. The two entries from the heavyweight fours were scratched prior to the race.

UB is in action on October 28 at Philadelphia's Head of the Schuylkill Regatta to conclude their fall season.
