UB Crews Wins Titles in Buffalo, Rochester

Busy weekend completed for crew squads

BUFFALO, NY - It was a busy weekend for the University at Buffalo's crew teams as rowers competed at Buffalo's Head of the Niagara Regatta, hosted by the West Side Rowing Club on Saturday, and Sunday's Stonehurst Regatta in Rochester along the Genesee River. UB had winning crews at both meets and of the 51 rowers in the weekend races, 43 earned medals.

At the Head of the Niagara races, the Bulls scored victories in all three races they entered. First-time rowers in the novice four and eight boats won their races as did the varsity eight team while a second novice eight entry placed second.

The novice four squad included coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY) with stroke seat rower Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY), third seat Crysten Rushmore (Syracuse, NY), second seat Kaitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY) and bow seat occupant Kelly Botsoglou (Lancaster, NY/Nardin Academy). The winning novice eight team consisted of coxswain Kimberly Campbell, stroke seat Kassia Threlkeld (Clifton Park, NY), Blum in the seventh seat, sixth seat Katie Noviello (Saratoga Springs, NY), fifth seat Caitlyn Lewis, fourth seat Marissa Ammendola (Nutley, NJ), third seat Elizabeth McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Nardin Academy), second seat Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and bow seat Samantha Atlas.

The varsity eight team also earned a win. Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) coxswained the team with Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield) in the stroke seat, seventh seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), sixth seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), fifth seat Kristen Bender (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), fourth seat Georgia Maloney (Cortland, NY/Homer Central), third seat Michelle Heller (Fresh Meadows, NY/Benjamin Cardozo), second seat Margaret Siller (Buffalo, NY/Hutch-Tech) and bow seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy).

At the Stonehurst meet, the lightweight four squad placed fourth in the open race that consisted of varsity and club entries. The squad was the first lightweight team to finish, thereby earning a first-place nod in that category. Syracuse won the open four competition. UB's varsity four team finished second overall in the same race. The varsity eight squad placed second to Queens College, narrowly being beaten by eight-tenths of a second.

UB's winning lightweight four entry consisted of coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), stroke seat Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), third seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), second seat Kaitlin Hambridge and Threlkeld in the bow seat. The varisty four team included coxswain Dawn Kavanaugh (Grand Island, NY/Nardin Academy), Aldridge in the stroke seat, third seat Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer) and bow seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview). The varsity eight team consisted of Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy Angels) at coxswain, stroke seat Andrea Lysiuk (St. Catharines, Ontario/Holy Cross), seventh seat Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), sixth seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), fifth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), fourth seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), third seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), second seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's) and Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood) in the bow seat.

Coming up this weekend is the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston along the fabled Charles River. The Head of the Charles meet is one of the largest in the country and UB crews have produced strong results in past races in Boston. Temperatures in the mid-50s with little chance of precipitation will greet rowers for the weekend races.
