Varsity Eights Round Out Top 10 After competing in a field of many of the nation’s top contenders, the UB Varsity Eight squads raced very well to bring their final championship times within the top 10 final times of the day. The Varsity Eight B boat, consisting of coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic), and Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), ended the day well after placing a dismal 18:46.10 in the AM race, only to rebound with a 15:38.01 to finish sixth in the PM race, and culminating a eighth-place overall finish of 34:24.11. Coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catherines, Ontario/West Park SS), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Nicki Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Jill Harcelrode (Portland, OR/Westview), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul's), and Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) rowed in the Varsity Eight A boat, finishing ninth with a final championship time of 34:29.91. Split Field In Varsity Four Out of 20 crews, the UB Varsity Four squad placed 10th. The team consisted of Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), Beth Gaworecki (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa). Brock University earned top honors with a final championship time of 36:37.15, crossing the finish a whole four seconds before second-place finisher Western Ontario. Next Race
The rowers see their next competition on Sat.-Sun., Oct. 22-23, when they travel to Boston, Mass. to partake in the Head of the Charles. |
