UB Opens Fall Season of Competition at Head of the Ohio

The University at Buffalo's women's crew 2000 fall season got off to a choppy start as the squad was scheduled to compete at the Head of the Ohio Regatta on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh. The meet included 138 college, high school and club programs and 952 boats entered in the competition. Notable schools to compete in the event included the Universities of Texas, Florida and Pittsburgh, Mid-American Conference members Ohio and Miami University as well as Buffalo's West Side Rowing Club.

Only one event that UB was entered in was completed due to inclement weather and choppy water conditions that caused many boats to be sunk or capsized. UB's lightweight eight squad was able to complete its race finishing fourth in the nine-team field, 54 seconds behind first-place Dayton. Villanova finished second. Comprising UB's lightweight eight squad were Janet Lane, Victoria Kolomiets, Andrea Junkans, Allison Junkans, Courtney Kane, Jaclyn Ruminski, Karey Smolar, Amy Donley and coxswain Katie Johnson.

UB will be in action at a pair of events this weekend as Buffalo's West Side Rowing Club hosts the Head of the Niagara Regatta on Saturday and the squad travels to Rochester's Stonehurst Regatta on Sunday. Saturday's Head of the Niagara race is scheduled to begin at 8:45 am. UB and the University of Toronto are the only intercollegiate programs entered although several other club squads are also expected to compete.
