Open Eights Finish As Top American Boat

The University at Buffalo rowing varsity eight squad faired extremely well at the Head of the Genesee on Sunday, as it finished third out of 35 boats. The championship time of 31:27.06 was better than a hand full of the nation’s best, which included Cornell, Syracuse, and the Harvard Radcliffe boats, and was the best time for an American boat. The third-place boat was rowed by coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/Buffalo Seminary), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s), Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville CI), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater, NJ/Holy Cross), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s) and Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic).

Open Fours Take Third And Fifth, Fourth On Sunday

The open four boats placed in the top five at both the Head of the Ohio and the Head of the Genesee and posted good results. At the HOTO, the Buffalo A squad of coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville C.I.), and Kristen Lane (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) placed third in 15:05.5810, while the Buffalo B squad of coxswain Adriane Wotawa-Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), Ashley Wodzinski, Brittany Aiello, Heidi Kenefick (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) and Diane Passenant (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) placed fifth in a time of 15:27.1250.

Freshman Novice Fours Place 1-2

The Freshman Novice Fours finished first and second out of nine boats at the Head of the Ohio Saturday. The Buffalo A boat, consisting of coxswain Leah Allen (Vestal, NY/Vestal), Stephanie Papaj (Kenmore, NY/Nardin), Kelsey Tretter (Rochester, NY/Brighton), Francisca Nwoke (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest), and Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart), finished in a time of 15:21.4140, while the Buffalo B boat of coxswain Lisa Rossi (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), Kate Garofalo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Sam Masucci (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Jordan Talbott (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park), and Tara Rudkoski claimed a time of 15:37.8250.

Lightweight Eights Place In Middle Of The Pack

Entering two lightweight boats, UB came away with fourth and sixth-place finishes out of seven boats on Saturday. The University at Pittsburgh finished first with a time of 13:58.9290. The fourth-place boat was rowed by coxswain Sarah McCann (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa), Beth Gaworecki (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Lauryn Brown (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), Alanna Wellspeak, Emma Brower, Rachel Chiles, Diana Minardo (Webster, NY/Webster), and Jessica Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), and the sixth-place boat was rowed by coxswain Kaitlyn Porreca (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint), Stevie Feig (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), Caroline Shillitoe (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), Andrea Patterson, Maureen Jones, Sarah Billiar (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American), Regina Yazbeck, Kirsten Olstad, and Lyndsey Milcarek with a time of 15:00.3530.

Novice Eights Earn Victory

The Buffalo B boat pulled away from Penn State for a victory in the Women’s Collegiate Freshman and Novice Eights event with a time of 14:44.1860. The Buffalo B consisted of coxswain Lisa Rossi, Amanda Schroeder (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Emily Garvey (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Cathleen Streicher, Gabriella Marotta, Alana Sharpe (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe SS), Kristen Nestler, Lauren Schifferle, and Rachael Kohrn. The Buffalo A boat finished third with a time of 15:18.1540 after Penn State and was rowed by coxswain Leah Allen, Stephanie Papaj, Kelsey Tretter, Francisca Nwoke, Mary Karl, Kate Garofalo, Tara Rudkoski, Jordan Talbott and Sam Masucci.
