Varsity Eight Boat Finishes Third At Head Of Genesee

Bulls put forth several impresive performances

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo rowing team had an impressive start in its opening weekend at the Head of the Genesee Regatta on Sunday afternoon. UB had top five finishes in both the Open Four and Open Eight races, with the varsity eight boat taking third place of 35 boats in the open eight competition.

The varsity eight boat which comprised of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park) and rowers Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart), Tara Rudkowski (Marrick, NY/Calhoun), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, NY/St. Paul), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross), Alana Sharpe (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe), Kelsey Tretter (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) finished the morning race of three miles in 17:57.27, which was third only to the top boats from Cornell and Radcliffe. In the afternoon race, the varsity eight boat also clocked in third at 15:31.35, which secured them a bronze medal for the second consecutive year.

The second varsity eight boat finished seventh in the race as it recorded an 18:28.48 in the morning race and a 15:59.79 clocking during the afternoon. The Bulls also fielded a C boat and their lightweight eight boat in the race, picking up finishes of 19th and 27th, respectively.

In the open four race, the varsity four boat, which was compried entirely of freshmen, finished fifth out of 13 boats in the race. The boat was comprised of coxswain Danielle Lynch and rowers Patricia Arcuri (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Sasha Bailey (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), Lindsey DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) and Megan Bayley (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe). That boat finished with a time of 20:40.60 in the morning race and 18:00.64 in the afternoon to finish fifth. The second varsity four boat finished in 11th place at the event.

The rowing team will be back in action on Oct. 20 and 21 for the Head of the Charles.
