Varsity Rowing Claims Top American Finish At Head Of The Genesee

Bulls take extra step by finishing ahead of three national powerhouses

ROCHESTER, NY - The University at Buffalo rowing team sent its Varsity Eight and Varsity Four boat to Rochester Sunday for the Head of the Genesee, and came back with more than a pair of strong finishes. The Varsity Eight boat finished third overall (and second in the open division) at the national meet, ahead of nationally-ranked powerhouses Cornell, Syracuse, and Harvard Radcliffe.

"We made a step that has not been made by UB before," head coach Rudy Wieler said. "Up until now, we have been talking the talk, and now he have walked the walk. Anytime a team can beat three programs who are not only ranked in the top 20 in nation, but programs in which we have never seen before, it is very significant."

The Varsity Eight crew, featuring coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/Buffalo Seminary), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s), Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville CI), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater, NJ/Holy Cross), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s) and Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic), finished with a championship time of 31:27.06, which was seconds better than perennial favorites Cornell, Syracuse, and Harvard. It was also the best time for an American boat, at a race that featured 35 boats from all over the country. Western Ontario claimed the top prize, finishing in a time of 30:58.43.

UB also sent an Open Four boats to the annual meet, capturing a time of 35:55.97, which was good enough for fourth place.

"It is all about consistency,"Wieler said. "Now we have to generate it at every race. Ultimately, we are very excited and extremely optimistic."

The Bulls ride their optimism down the road, where they will compete at the Head of the Niagara on Sunday, October 15. The meet will be held at the Westside Rowing Club in Buffalo, NY.
