UB Rowing Takes Two First-Place Titles At Head Of The Ohio

Novice Fours and Novice Eights claim top honors in fall opener

PITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo rowing team kicked off its fall season Saturday as the Novice squads took home a pair of first-place titles at the Head of the Ohio. The Novice Four boats finished first and second in its race while the Novice Eight boats claimed top honors as well as third place.

The Freshman Novice four boats finished first and second out of nine boats. The Buffalo A boat, consisting of coxswain Leah Allen (Vestal, NY/Vestal), Stephanie Papaj (Kenmore, NY/Nardin), Kelsey Tretter (Rochester, NY/Brighton), Francisca Nwoke (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest), and Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart), finished in a time of 15:21.4140.

The Novice Eight boats managed to pull away from Penn State for a victory in the event with a time of 14:44.1860. The winning UB boat consisted of coxswain Lisa Rossi (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), Amanda Schroeder (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Emily Garvey (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Cathleen Streicher, Gabriella Marotta, Alana Sharpe (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe SS), Kristen Nestler, Lauren Schifferle, and Rachael Kohrn.

Entering two lightweight boats, UB came away with fourth and sixth-place finishes out of seven boats on Saturday, completing the race in times of 14:36.0280 and 15:00.3530, respectively. The University at Pittsburgh finished first with a time of 13:58.9290.

In the Open Four race, the Buffalo A squad of coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville C.I.), and Kristen Lane (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) placed third in 15:05.5810, while the Buffalo B squad placed fifth in a time of 15:27.1250.

The Bulls next send the Varsity boats to Rochester, NY for the Head of the Genesee on Sunday.
