Bulls Post Four Winners in Season Opener

UB crew squads have impressive weekend at Pittsburgh's Head of the Ohio Regatta

PITTSBURGH, PA ­ The University at Buffalo opened the 2004-05 crew season with impressive results at the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh. UB teams won three races (Club 4, Club 8, Lightweight 8 and Lightweight 4) and scored a second and a third-place finish in two others and also added a fourth and and an eighth-place finish.

In the Club 4 race, consisting of 28 teams, the Bulls had three entries, with the A squad winning the race in 19:03.35. The B entry placed second in 19:26.02 and the C entry was fourth in 20:02.35. UB's winning boat consisted of stroke seat Sandra Kisil (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale SS), third seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), second seat Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), bow seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park).

The Lightweight 8 squad easily won its race in 17:58.46, more than 35 seconds ahead of the runners-up from the St. Catharines Rowing Club. In the boat for the Bulls were stroke seat Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), seventh seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), sixth seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), fifth seat Mary Szvoren (East Aurora, NY/Buffalo Seminary), fourth seat Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), third seat Beth Gaworecki (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), second seat Jen Victor (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), bow seat Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst). There were six entries in the race.

Another UB victorious entry was in the Lightweight 4 competition, which consisted of 14 teams. The Bulls raced to a 20:21.58 showing, about a half-second in front of the second-place crew from the Three Rivers Rowing Association. The Bulls' entry included Barnum in the stroke seat, Corey in the third seat, Barrell in the second seat and Michael in the bow seat with Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) serving as coxswain.

UB also won the Club 8 race. Originally listed as finishing third, the Bulls were awarded first place after race officials reviewed the results. UB's entry consisted of stroke seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), seventh seat Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer), sixth seat Kristen Bender (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), fifth seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), fourth seat Marissa Ammondola (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), third seat Katherine Laub (Batavia, NY/Batavia), second seat Rachel Albert (St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central), bow seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and coxswain Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy). There were 17 entries in the race.

In other action, the Varsity 8 team placed third of 10 entries. The Youth/Freshman 8 entry was eighth of 24 squads and the Youth 4 team was fourth of 17.

The Bulls will compete again on Sunday at Rochester's Stonehurst Regatta.
