UB Rowing Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Bulls Place First and Second in Varsity 8 UB polished off the competition for its best-ever trip to the Head of the Ohio Saturday, as it pulled away with victories in three out of four races. The Varsity Eight teams found success, finishing first and second in the races with times of 15:12 and 15:36. The first-place team consisted of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catherines, Ontario/West Park SS), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Nicki Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul's), Jill Harcelrode (Portland, OR/Westview), Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), and Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston). In the boat for the second-place team were coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), and Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker).
Novice 8 Claim Fastest Time In All Categories The Novice Eight boat won the collegiate youth eight with a time of 16:01, the fastest time in the collegiate, club and high school categories. The Bulls defeated West Virginia, who won the race last year. The freshmen Bulls in the boat were coxswain Adrienne Wotowa Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Laura Sherman (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and Thandiwe Price (Springfield Gardens, NY/Frank Sinatra School of the Arts). Two-Second Victory In Lightweight Four Out of 17 crews, the UB Lightweight Four squad won by two seconds ahead of the University of Pittsburgh. The team consisted of coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), Beth Gaworecki (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Elly Henderson (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), and Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa).
Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) and Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) each were awarded gold medals for their first-place finishes in the Novice Eight and the Varsity Eight competitions.
