UB Completes Best-Ever Performance At Head Of The Ohio
In Women's Open Eights, the Bulls represented two teams, both of which found success, as they finished first and second in the race with times of 15:12 and 15:36 respectively. The team had only entered this particular race once before. The team that placed first consisted of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park SS), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Nicki Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul's), Jill Harcelrode (Portland, OR/Westview), Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), and Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston). The second team consisted of coxswain Margaret Devendorf Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), and Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker). .
The Freshman/Novice Eight won the collegiate youth eight with a time of 16:01, defeating West Virginia who won the race last year. The squad had the fastest time of all youh eight's in the collegiate, club and high school categories. In the boat for the freshman Bulls were coxswain Adrienne Wotowa Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate Institute), Melina Dicosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross HS), Laura Sherman (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) , and Thandiwe Price (Springfield Gardens, NY/Frank Sinatra School of the Arts).. The lightweight four also picked up the win in the field of 17 crews with a time of 17:38, which was two seconds faster than second-place University of Pittsburgh. The boat consisted of coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), Beth Gaworecki (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Elly Henderson (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), and Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa).
