UB Rowing Welcomes Four Newcomers
“We didn’t have a lot of recruiting opportunities this year because we didn’t have that many people graduate, but the four we brought in have all been part of winning crews,” said Wieler. “Each of them have been in medal situations in some of the top races in the United States and Canada and all four of them are very competitive.” Arcuri has won four medals at the Canadian Schoolboy Rowing Championships, including one gold and three bronze medals. She also won a bronze medal in the junior double at the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia. “Patricia is a very good technician and racer,” said Wieler. “Wherever she has gone she has won medals and we are very excited to have her here.” Bailey has won three gold medals at the New York State Rowing Championships and was part of the top American crew at the 2006 Royal Canadian Henley. Bailey’s crew also finished eighth of 62 boats at the Head of the Charles Regatta in 2006 and 11th at the US Rowing Youth National Championships. “Sasha has been in some of the best crews wherever she has competed,” said Wieler. “I think she is going to fit in very well with this team and her experiences will only benefit our program.” Bayley was named the recipient of the Alex Wilson Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior with strong academic standing and someone who has demonstrated a personal commitment to the sport of rowing and the Governor Simcoe community. Bayley won a bronze medal in the senior women’s heavyweight at the Canadian Schoolboy Championships in 2007 and won a silver medal in the same race in 2005. “Megan brings some good size to this program, but more importantly brings great experiences,” said Wieler. “She comes from the same high school as Alana Sharpe (St. Catherines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe) and having someone you know in the program always makes things easier.” DiCosimo has a closer connection to the UB rowing team as her cousin Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) is beginning her junior season with the Bulls. DiCosimo finished in the top 10 in the Rowontario.ca erg competitions in 2004 and won a bronze medal at the Canadian Schoolboy Championships with fellow newcomer, Patricia Arcuri. “Lindsay is a great leader and she is going to help this team for the next four years,” said Wieler. “She has some good size and some great experiences that she will bring with her to Buffalo.” “I think this class, although not big in size, has a lot of talent,” Wieler added. “We are going to move them into the varsity squad immediately so they can learn right away what it takes to succeed.” |
