BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo head crew coach Rudy Wieler has announced the hiring of Sarah Vieira as an assistant coach. A native of Pompton Lakes, NJ, Vieira is a former four-year letterwinner with the UB crew program, and she served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2002-03.

As a student-athlete at UB, Vieira won a gold medal as part of the novice four squad at the 2000 New York State Championships, and she was the second seat occupant on the gold medal-winning varsity eight team at the SUNY Championships and the bronze medal-winning varsity eight squad at the New York State Championships in 2002. Vieira was a team captain as a senior in 2001-02, and she was also named team Most Valuable Player.

Vieira earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from UB in 2001, and she is currently completing work on her master's degree at Buffalo, also in sociology. While a member of the crew team, she was a UB Scholar Athlete.

"The University at Buffalo crew program had an exciting opportunity to hire one of its own," said Wieler. "Sarah is a young woman who came through the ranks as a walk-on, as a member of the varsity team, as a team captain and then as a successful volunteer coach for a year. We feel that this appointment is a logical and natural one for our team."

In her role as assistant coach, Vieira will work with the Bulls' novice rowers, as she did last season as a volunteer assistant. On Wieler's staff, she joins UB assistant coach Jim Wynne, who is entering his fifth season at Buffalo.
