Eight Rowers Named CRCA Scholar Athletes

Award given to student-athletes who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

BUFFALO, NY - Eight members of the University at Buffalo rowing squad were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athletes for the 2007 season. To qualify for this honor, a student must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, be in at least her second year of eligibility and must have rowed in her institution’s NCAA eligible boats for a minimum of 75 percent of her school’s spring races. Most importantly, all eligible student-athletes must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

The Bulls had two members of four different boats honored, including two members from their nationally-ranked lightweight eight boat. Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Diana Minardo (Rochester, NY/Webster) each received recognition as Barnum has a 3.72 GPA in studio art and communication design, while Minardo, an occupational therapy major, has a 3.50 GPA.

Representing UB’s varsity eight boat is coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catherines, Ontario/West Park) and Brittany Aiello (Lancaster, NY/Clarence). Briggs, who is a business major, has a 3.93 GPA, while Aiello has a 3.73 GPA in psychology.

From the Bulls’ second varsity eight is Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and Ashley Wodzinski (Lakeview, NY/Nardin Academy). Witte is a business major with a 3.71 GPA, while Wodzinski has a 3.86 GPA and is a history major.

Finally, from UB’s varsity four boat is coxswain Adriane Wotawa-Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and Heidi Kenefick (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit). Wotawa-Bergen has a 3.90 GPA and is an electrical engineering major, while Kenefick has a 3.75 GPA in nutrition science.

The Bulls are coming off their second straight second place finish at the ECAC Metro Championships and a victory by their second varsity eight boat at the Dad Veil Regatta.
