Crew Finishes Season at Dad Vail Regatta

Sarah Vieira and Molly Beck Named Co-Captains for 2001-02

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University at Buffalo women's crew team concluded the 2000-01 season by competing at the 63rd annual Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. The Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States.

Buffalo's Lightweight Eight boat, consisting of Andrea Junkans (Granger, IN/Pittsford Mendon (NY)), Colleen Robinson (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy), Becky Mohr (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), Allison Junkans (Granger, IN/Pittsford Mendon (NY)), Jessica O'Grady (Webster, NY/Webster), Karey Smollar (Altamont, NY/Guilderland), Victoria Kolomiets (Albany, NY/Guilderland), Courtney Kane (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Sarah Wold (Clifton Park, NY/Indian River) (coxswain), finished fifth in the finals in a time of 7:42.3 after advancing with a time of 7:15.6 in Friday's heat.

In other action, Buffalo's Novice Four boat, consisting of Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), Tracy Torelli (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)) and Katie Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) (coxswain), advanced to the semifinals with a second-place finish in Friday's heat with a time of 8:16.13. Bowdoin, the boat that placed ahead of the Bulls in their heat, won the final race while the Bulls finished third in the semifinals. UB's Varsity Eight placed fifth in Friday's heat in a time of 7:21.8 but did not advance to the semifinals after finishing fifth in the repechage in 8:15.9. Buffalo's Novice Eight boat was also eliminated in Friday's heat.

With the conclusion of the 2000-01 season at the Dad Vail Regatta, the Bulls named Molly Beck (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) and Sarah Vieira (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Diocesan) co-captains for the 2001-02 season.
