Blum, Hazey, Logue, Knighton earn accolades

BUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo crew squad presented its team awards for the 2003-04 season at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Four Points Sheraton.

Head coach Rudy Wieler made the following presentations: Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) was selected as the Top Newcomer; Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview) earned the Most Improved Player Award; Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) received the Coaches' Award; and Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year.

The Top Newcomer Award is presented to the individual student-athlete who distinguishes herself as the most talented new player on the team or the individual who accomplishes the greatest achievements as a first-year player. Blum was the team's stroker for the novice eight team during the spring. She helped the Bulls to first-place finishes in head-to-head races against Marist and Ithaca (March 27), Rhode Island (April 4) and Eastern Michigan (April 25). During the fall campaign, she was also part of the winning youth four entry at the Head of the Ohio and novice four teams at the Head of the Niagara, Head of the Fish and Frostbite Regattas.

The Most Improved Player Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made the greatest stride or improvement in her performance from the previous season or from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Hazey spent the spring season in the stroke seat for the Bulls' second varsity eight squad. The team scored a second-place finish at the Knecht Cup in Camden, NJ on April 18, placing behind Kansas by just three seconds. It was UB's best-ever finish at the meet. Hazey also stroked the second varsity eight to a dual-meet win over Eastern Michigan in the Harvey Cup races. During the fall season, she was part of the winning open eight team at the Head of the Fish Regatta and the second-place varsity eight team at the Frostbite Regatta.

The Coaches' Award is selected by the head coach and is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the team virtues as defined by the head coach. The recipient is one who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve. Logue served as the coxswain for UB's second varsity eight team. She was also part of the squad that placed second at the Knecht Cup and defeated Eastern Michigan at the Harvey Cup. Logue also coxed the winning varsity eight entry at the Head of the Niagara Regatta last fall.

The Most Valuable Player Award is given to the student-athlete who makes the most significant contribution to the accomplishments of the team through her skills and leadership. Knighton, a team captain in 2003-04, was the fifth-seat occupant of the Bulls' first varsity eight shell. She helped the first varsity eight to a fourth-place finish among 22 entries at the Knecht Cup. During the fall, she split time between the eights and fours, earning a first-place finish for the varsity four at the Frostbite Regatta and second-place finishes with the open four at the Head of the Fish and varsity eight at the Stonehurst Regattas.

The Bulls finished fifth among nine Division I rowing programs from the Northeast at the Metro Cup in Worcester, MA held this past weekend. All four of UB's entries reached the Grand Finals with UB's varsity four and second varsity eight placing fourth in their championship finals while the first varsity eight was fifth and the novice eight squad was sixth in their final races.
