Bulls Finish Crew Season in Fifth Place at Metro CupWORCESTER, MA All four of the University at Buffalo's entries in the 2004 Metro Cup Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA reached the Grand Finals in their respective categories. UB finished with a pair of fourth-place finishes (varsity four and second varsity eight), a fifth- (varsity eight) and a sixth-place (novice eight) showing to score 51 points in the team standings. Massachusetts, with victories in three of the four races, won the Metro Cup for the second consecutive year at 68 points. A steady morning rain hampered the qualifying heats with sunny skies in place for the afternoon finals. In the varsity four race, UB finished third in its heat (9:05.82) and placed fourth in the Grand Final in 8:19.82. Marist won the final race in 7:56.9. UB's boat included stroke seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), third seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), second seat Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), bow seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker) and coxswain Katie Jones (Clarence, NY/Clarence). The novice eight team qualified fifth for the Grand Finals in 8:14.60, placing third in its heat. The Bulls finished sixth in the six-team final in 7:27.55 as Massachusetts took the top spot in 7:14.52. The UB entry consisted of Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) in the stroke seat, Crysten Rushmore (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) in the seventh seat, Elizabeth McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Nardin Academy) in the sixth seat, Marissa Ammendola (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) in the fifth seat, Samantha Atlas (Rockville Center, NY/South Side) in the fourth seat, Katherine Laub (Batavia, NY/Batavia) in the third seat, Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy) in the second seat, Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the bow seat and coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg). The Bulls won their heat in the second varsity eight race in 8:03.98, the second-fastest qualifying mark of the day. Competing in the Grand Final, the Bulls took fourth in 7:26.98 with Massachusetts winning in 7:14.14. The UB entry consisted of Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview) in the stroke seat, Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood) in the seventh seat, Andrea Lysiuk (St. Catharines, Ontario/Holy Cross SS) in the sixth seat, Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie) in the fifth seat, Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield) in the fourth seat, Kristin Bender (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) in the third seat, Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) in the second seat, Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the bow seat and coxswain Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy). UB's varsity eight entry barely made the Grand Finals, qualifying sixth for the six-team final, in 7:30.45. Coming
back to compete in the finals, the Bulls raced to a 6:57.67 finish to place fifth as Massachusetts cruised to an easy win in
6:38.51, more than 12 seconds ahead of second-place Villanova. The Bulls' entry included
