Weather Conditions Halt Metro Cup

Novice eight wins heat, Varsity eight finishes fourth in only races of weekend

WORCESTER, MA The Metro Cup races, part of the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships, were a victim of the weather on Sunday as less than ideal conditions prevented the University at Buffalo from competing in several events. Two heats in both the novice eight and varsity eight competitions were completed before the weather scrubbed the remainder of the day's action.

In the novice eight race, UB won its five-team heat and posted the fastest time of the 10 overall entrants. The Bulls won the heat in 7:09.4, two seconds faster than Rhode Island (7:11.04) and 10 seconds ahead of Delaware (7:19.4). The time was also faster than first-place Villanova's mark of 7:15.6 in the second heat. Comprising the Buffalo entry were coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), stroke seat Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), seventh seat Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), sixth seat Mia Pavletic (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central), fifth seat Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), fourth seat Jill Harclerode (Portland, OR/Westview), third seat Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), second seat Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and bow seat Darcie Bryant (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker).

In the only other event that was run on Sunday, UB finished fourth in a five-team heat in the varsity eight race. The Bulls finished in 6:53.9, more than 17 seconds behind first-place Massachusetts' 6:36.3. The time was the eighth-fastest of the two heats, meaning that the Bulls would have raced in the Petite Final or consolation race. The UB entry consisted of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park SS), stroke seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), seventh seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), sixth seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), fifth seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's), fourth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), third seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), second seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) and bow seat Corrine Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland).

Racing in the second varsity eight and varsity four competitions was entirely cancelled with no heats or finals contested.

The Bulls will look for better weather and racing conditions when they head for Philadelphia's Dad Vail Regatta, starting Friday, in the final meet of the season.
