Crew Places Seventh at NY State Championships

Novice Four Rows to First-Place Finish

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's crew team rowed its way to a seventh-place finish out of 24 schools at the 2001 New York State Championships, held on Sunday, May 6 in Whitney Point, NY. The Bulls finished with 234.6 points in the final standings, less than 11 points behind sixth-place RIT and more than 48 points ahead of eighth-place Dowling. Ithaca won the competition with 401.5 points.

Buffalo's Novice Four boat, consisting of Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), Tracy Torelli (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)) and Katie Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) (coxswain), captured a gold medal with a first-place finish in the finals of their race in 8:26, 14 seconds ahead of their closest competition, RIT, in the six-boat field. The foursome advanced to the championship after winning their earlier heat by more than 20 seconds over the other competition.

In other action, UB's Varsity Eight qualified for the petite finals and placed 12th out of 16 entries, finishing the race in 7:54.84, and UB's second Varsity Eight finished fifth out of a field of eight in the grand finals with a time of 7:34.10. The Novice Eight boat finished eighth in the finals in a time of 7:49.4.

The Bulls will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12.
